Type locality: north part of Adriatic Sea
[Spelling of the epithet (see Art. 60.10) depends on whether "acus" connotes needle, in which case, acus, aci =aciformis, or connotes husk or scale, in which case acus, aceris= aceriformis. Epithet refers to Euglena acus, a freshwater form with a strong similarity. The freshwater form was so called because of the resemblance to the pipefish Syngnathus acus, which is needle-shaped.]
