Basionym: See Halymenia furcellata var. capensis C. Agardh 1822
[cites Halymenia furcellata var. capensis? Ag. Spec. Alg. I, p. 214; possibly to be regarded as a new species with the Agardh name to be considered a questionable taxonomic synonym; 2 things argue against that: 1. the name "capensis", 2. the phrase "Dans l'Halymenia capensis, ou du moins dans l'Algue que j'y rapporte" indicates some willingness to consider them the same. Gymnophlaea canariensis Kützing was based on H. capensis sensu Montagne (i.e., excluding the Agardh type). If H. capensis is treated as a new species attributed to Montagne, then the change of epithet to canariensis would be incorrect]
