Halymenia monardiana Montagne
Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot., ser. 2, 10: 275, no fig. 1838. (L)
Type locality: Algeria: Cherchell
Collector: Monard brothers [Charles (1795-1854) and Pascal (1795-1874), both of whom were military surgeons]

See Sebdenia monardiana (Montagne) Berthold 1882 (T)
[Based on Halymenia mesenteriformis Monard, ined. Named for "MM. Monard, médecins de l'armáe d'Afrique". In Flore d'Algérie, 1847 (e.g. p. 115) Montagne (or the printer) altered without explanation the spelling of the epithet from "Monardiana" to "Monnardiana" and used the spelling "Monnard" to refer to the collector[s] of numerous species of algae in Algeria and Spain. In the sections on lichens and fungi, Montagne retained the spelling "Monard". Dufour (Annales des sciences naturelles 23: 155. 1831) used the spelling "Monard" in the protologue for Serratula monardi, writing "... par MM. Monard, deux frères jumeaux, médecins militaires qui joignent à des connaissances positives en botanique un zèle dans les recherches, une générosité dans les communications qui sont peu communes. Ils explorent en ce moment les montagnes d'Alger." Four other taxa (cf. IPNI) were also named for the brothers, all using the spelling "Monard" in the epithet. Military and medical publications spell the name "Monard". Necrology: Bull. Hist. Nat. Metz 14: 155-170. 1876.]
