Locality Upper French Canyon Basin (Trib. Piute Creek and S. Fork San Joaquin River), W. over Sierran Crest from Bishop, Inyo Co.; Royce and Merriam Parks, WNW, over 13,000'; Pine Creek Pass N, 11,000'; Crest E. Av. ca. 12,500'; Pilot Knob SW 12,245'; Basin mostly above 11,000'.

HabitatLodgepole forest French Canyon up to ca. 10,400'; Subalpine forest to 11,000' (even 11,200') on favored rocky slopes; occasional Pinus albicaulis Krumholtz to 11,200' - rare specimens to 12,000'; basin mostly alpine with extensive areas herbaceous alpine cover. This Carex one of 2 species growing in one clump above west bank of creek. Draining north over open Salix slope into French canyon from lowest lake (10,900') on lowest terrace, south side of Basin. Subalpine forest away from Salix and up slopes above lake.
