NotesHerb. Among Scirpus and Typha thickets; with Wolffia columbiana and scattered Lemna turionifera with small greenish-brown turions.Note: There are a few individuals of Lemna turionifera in this sample. In the fall this species develops small, greenish-brown rootless fronds called turions. The turions contain starch and sink to the bottom during the winter months. This species is unmistakable with its small, dark, roundish turions (see photo). Most of the fronds in this sample are L. valdiviana.The fronds of Lemna valdiviana are typically thin, oblong and one-nerved (generally 2-4 mm long). They often remain attached in colonies of 4-6 (or more). The fronds are thinner and more transparent than L. minuscula. According to Landolt (1980), L. valdiviana is found most commonly in oceanic climates.Lemna minuscula has smaller fronds, generally 1-3 mm long. They are thicker in the middle than L. valdiviana. They usually occur as single individuals or in colonies of two.;
