Locality Upper French Canyon basin (tributary of Piute Creek and South Fork of San Joaquin River), west over Sierran Crest from Bishop, Inyo co.; Royce and Merriman Peaks west-northwest, over 13000'; Pine Creek Pass north 11100'., Crest east-northwest ca. 12500'; Pilot Knob southwest 12245'; basin mostly above 11000'. Below (i.e. south of) the low knob on the west side of French Lake.

HabitatLodgepole forest French Canyon up to ca. 10400'; subalpine forest to 11000'(even 11200') on favored rocky slopes; occasional Pinus albicaulis krumholtz to 11200'- rare specimens to 12000'; basin mostly alpine with extensive areas of herbaceous alpine cover. Raillardella in colonies in dry ravine on the steep rocky slope; krumholtz at top of knob - good sized Pinus albicaulis on this slope. Many herbs.
