Locality Northern High Sierra Nevada. Along Concow Road 1.1 road km southwest of Philbrook Road; north-facing slopes above the east end of Philbrook Reservoir.

HabitatTransition area between small meadow with lodgepole pine and Veratrum californicum, and forest of white fir and Jeffrey pine. Snow fairly recently melted off here, most herbaceous species still sprouting. Center 1/3 of flowers bright yellow-prange, outer 2/3 white agiing purple; underground stems easily breaking somewhat above bulb; leaves shiny-green, wavy margined.
