Note: We are unable to find any other use of the name Sphacelaria australis and assume that it resulted from confusion with Dictyopteris australis (Sonder) Askenasy, the next species in Agadi & Untawale's floristic account of Goa, India. The intended name probably was S. furcigera Kützing (treated as a taxonomic synonym of S. rigidula on page 576 of this catalogue).
