Mychodea episcopalis J. Agardh, 1885: 82 (type locality: California, U.S.A.).—Delf & Michell, 1921: 106.
Note: According to Kylin (1932: 64), the type specimen of this species is sterile but probably representative of the alga now known as Sarcodiotheca gaudichaudii (Montagne) Gabrielson (1982: 93) (Gigartina gaudichaudii Montagne, 1842b: 255; type locality: Paita, Peru). Papenfuss (notes) examined the specimen from Cape Morgan, eastern Cape Province, South Africa, on which the Delf & Michell record is based and found it to be representative of Hypnea.
