EXCLUDED RECORD

Gigartina bracteata (S. Gmelin) Setchell & Gardner

Fucus bracteatus S. Gmelin, 1768: 212–213; type locality: "Mare indicum'').—C. Agardh, 1820a: 123–124.

Gigartina bracteata (S. Gmelin) Setchell & Gardner, 1933: 258, 295.

Note: The protologue of Fucus bracteatus includes the citation of "Folium Algae marinae, cribriforme, latum orbiculare'' Seba (1758: 192, pl. CIII: fig. 1), "Algae marinae folia magna, lata reticulata'' Seba (l.c.: figs. 2, 3), and "Agarum secundum sive brachiatum [bracteatum], Alga bracheolata [bracteolata]'' Rumphius (1750: 186). Seba's material probably came from the Cape of Good Hope on the Atlantic Ocean, while Rumphius dealt with the plants of Amboina on the Banda Sea, an outlier of the Pacific Ocean. Seba's illustrations were considered to constitute the type of F. bracteatus by Setchell & Gardner (l.c.). Gigartina bracteata is restricted to the cold waters of western Cape Province, South Africa. Rumphius's alga was referred by G. Martens (1868: 43) to Mastocarpus klenzeanus Kützing, a taxonomic synonym of Sarcodia montagneana (J. Hooker & Harvey) J. Agardh (q.v.). There is no indication that Gmelin had original collections at hand, so that the provenance "Mare indicum'' should be considered erroneous.
