Fucus serratus Linnaeus, 1753: 1158 (type locality: "Oceano'').—Montagne & Millardet, 1862: 21–22.
Note: While it is not known what Montagne & Millardet (l.c.) had in hand when reporting this species from Réunion, it undoubtedly was not Fucus serratus, a species otherwise known only from the North Atlantic Ocean. Those authors cited records of this species from the Cape of Good Hope (Rudolphi, 1831: 172; Suhr, 1834: 722), but these were referred by Papenfuss (1940b: 9–10) to Anthophycus longifolius (Turner) Kützing (q.v.).
