Fucus geniculatus S. Gmelin, 1768: 75, pl. IA: fig. 3 (type locality: "oceanus'').—Poiret, 1808b: 360.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Madagascar, Mauritius.

Note: The status of this species remains uncertain in the absence of an authentic specimen, but the illustration strongly resembles Pelvetia canaliculata (Linnaeus) Decaisne & Thuret (1845: 13) (Fucus canaliculatus Linnaeus, 1767b: 716; type locality: not specified), a species known with certainty only from the North Atlantic Ocean. It is not known what Poiret had in hand when reporting this species from Madagascar and Mauritius.
