Ulva intricata Clemente y Rubio, 1807: 320 (type locality: Cádiz, Spain).
Valonia intricata (Clemente y Rubio) C. Agardh, 1823 [1822–1823]: 430–431.
Ascothamnion intricatum (Clemente y Rubio) Kützing, 1849: 508.—G. Murray, 1887: 40.
INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Mauritius, South Africa, Sri Lanka.
Note: Kützing (1843b: 313) established the genus Ascothamnion to accommodate Ulva intricata, which had been referred to Valonia by C. Agardh but which seemed to Kützing to be more closely related to Cymopolia Lamouroux and Dasycladus C. Agardh in the Dasycladaceae. As pointed out by Ruprecht (1849: 84), A. intricatum is a bryozoan, Zoobotryon pellucidum Ehrenberg (Vesiculariidae). This widespread species was reported as Ascothamnion sp. from Natal, South Africa, by Barton (1896: 458).
