INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: India, Somalia, South Africa.
Note: Van den Hoek (1982: 122) reduced Willeella to the rank of section within Cladophora. In the same work (p. 35) he noted that some species of Cladophora as currently circumscribed are more closely related to species in other genera than to species within the genus. He proposed two alternative solutions: either merge all genera of Cladophorales with Cladophora or split the genus into a number of possibly more sharply delimited genera. He rejected the first solution as impractical and noted that the reticulate morphological relationships within the Cladophorales made the second solution difficult. We anticipate that molecular data will support the recognition of segregate genera and therefore retain Willeella. The first use of the combination C. ordinata (van den Hoek, 1979: 380, footnote) was invalid since bibliographic data for the basionym was not given and thus Art. 33.2 was not satisfied.
