Note: The synonymy was proposed by Ardissone (1887 [1886–1887]: 212). Conferva rigida C. Agardh is a later homonym of C. rigida Hudson (1762: 479; syntype localities: England: Hounslow Heath, London; Lug River, Hereford), a name of unknown application. Some authors treat Chaetomorpha aerea (Dillwyn) Kützing as an attached form of C. linum, but we recognize it as a separate species.

Addendum: This species was recorded (as C. chlorotica) by Forbes (1901: 563) from Socotra.
