CLADOPHORALES

Note: The order Siphonocladales Oltmanns (1904: 134, 255, "Siphonocladiales'') originally included the family Cladophoraceae, on which the order Cladophorales Haeckel (1894: 302, 305) had already been established. There is no consensus as to whether one or both orders should be recognized, the decision resting chiefly on the value placed on segregative cell division as a taxonomic character. Division of the complex into families is even more controversial, reflecting the lack of clear-cut boundaries. We recognize a single order comprising four families.
