IOC entry for Enteromorpha juergensii

Previous entry: Enteromorpha intestinalis var. mesenteriformis

Enteromorpha juergensii Kützing, nom. illeg.

Conferva fuscobrunnea Mertens in Jürgens, 1816: fasc. 1: no. 5 (`fusco-brunnea') (syntype localities: Jeverland and Ostfriesland, Germany).

Scytosiphon juergensii C. Agardh, 1828: 49, nom. illeg.

Enteromorpha juergensii Kützing, 1847a: 165 (`jürgensii'), nom. illeg.—Hauck, 1888 [1886–1889]: 92.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Madagascar.

Note: In transferring Conferva fuscobrunnea to Scytosiphon, C. Agardh (l.c.) unnecessarily changed the epithet. Because S. juergensii is illegitimate and not priorable, Enteromorpha juergensii must be considered a nomen novum rather than a new combination. It also is illegitimate, however, since Kützing was obligated to restore the epithet fuscobrunnea. If this species is to be maintained, as by Hauck (1884 [1882–1885]: 433), the epithet fuscobrunnea must be employed. We have examined a syntype specimen in UC and found it to be representative of Enteromorpha.
