INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Australia, Indonesia (Java), Laccadive Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania.

Note: Turbinaria vulgaris is a name used by J. Agardh (1848b: 267–268) to encompass four varieties, namely, var. conoides J. Agardh, var. decurrens (Bory de Saint-Vincent) J. Agardh, var. triquetra J. Agardh, and var. trialata J. Agardh. Each variety is recognized in this catalogue as a species so that it is not possible to assign records of T. vulgaris that lack a varietal designation. In accordance with Art. 7.5, the type of T. vulgaris is the type of the oldest available name cited in the protologue. Two such names come into consideration: T. decurrens and T. denudata, published simultaneously by Bory de Saint-Vincent in 1828. P. Silva, Meñez, & Moe (1987: 90) designated the type of T. decurrens as the type of T. vulgaris. It is puzzling that J. Agardh failed to mention the type locality (in the sea between Tahiti and New Guinea) in his account of var. decurrens.
