The earliest homonym of Fucus virgatus Mertens is F. virgatus Gunnerus (1766: 45; type locality: Norway), which was referred by Linnaeus (1771: 509) to Fucus aculeatus Linnaeus (Desmarestia aculeata (Linnaeus) Lamouroux (q.v.)). Another earlier homonym is F. virgatus Roussel (1806: 90; type locality: Calvados, France), of unknown application.
