Previous entry: Sargassum squarrosum forma sumatranum

* Sargassum subfalcatum Sonder

Sargassum subfalcatum Sonder, 1854: 2, 3, footnote (type locality: southeast Malang province, Java, Indonesia).—Möbius, 1893: 137.— De Wildeman, 1897a: 160.— De Wildeman, 1900: 384.— Reinbold in Weber-van Bosse, 1913a: 162 (excluding var. montebellense).— Grunow, 1915 [1915–1916]: 408–409.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Indonesia.

Note: Sargassum subfalcatum var. montebellense Grunow, which was said by Reinbold (l.c.) not to warrant taxonomic recognition, was later treated by Grunow (as it is) as a variety of S. ilicifolium. Reinbold cited under S. subfalcatum a specimen in Weber-van Bosse's herbarium (L) from Bali Strait determined as S. subfalcatum var. baliensis Grunow mscr., a name that does not appear in Grunow's posthumously published monograph of the genus (Grunow, 1915–1916).
