* Sargassum incisifolium (Turner) C. Agardh var. suhrii Grunow

Sargassum incisifolium (Turner) C. Agardh var. suhrii Grunow, 1915 [1915–1916]: 359 (syntype localities: "Cap. bonae spei et Port Natal'' [South Africa]).—Eyre, Broekhuysen, & Crichton, 1938: 89, 92, 102.

Misapplied name:

Carpacanthus suhrii.—Kützing, 1849: 624 (African record only).— Kützing, 1861: 13, pl. 42: figs. Ia–c.— De Toni, 1895b: 118 (African record only).

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: South Africa.

Note: Kützing (1849: 624), in transferring Sargassum acanthicarpum Suhr (type locality: Australia) to Carpacanthus, changed the epithet to suhrii and included African material in the species ("ad oras orientales Africae''). Papenfuss (notes) examined the African specimen in Kützing's herbarium (in L) and found that it was from Algoa Bay, eastern Cape Province, rather than from East Africa. Kützing (1861: 13, pl. 42: figs. Ia–c) later illustrated the African material. Although at first glance it appears that Grunow (l.c.) was transferring Carpacanthus suhrii back to Sargassum (as a variety of S. incisifolium), in fact he placed the Australian and African plants in different species, the former under the name S. tristichum Sonder, the latter under the name S. incisifolium var. suhrii.
