INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Andaman Islands, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Persian Gulf, Réunion, Somalia.

Note: Sargassum obovatum Greville, a later homonym of S. obovatum Harvey (1834a), is included as a synonym on the authority of Grunow (1916 [1915–1916]: 24–25). Previously, J. Agardh (1889: 102) had assigned it to S. aquifolium (Turner) C. Agardh.
