Note: Fucus angustifolius Turner, the intended basionym of Sargassum angustifolium, is not priorable since it is a later homonym. Sargassum angustifolium C. Agardh is treated as a nomen novum in accordance with Art. 58.3. The earliest homonym is F. angustifolius S. Gmelin (1768: 205; syntype localities: England; "circiter Leucas ab ostio Bolschaia fluv.'' [Russia]), a name of unknown application. Another earlier homonym is F. angustifolius Stackhouse ex Withering (1796: 92–93; type locality: Portreath near St. Ives, Cornwall, England), which was referred by Turner (1802a: 120) to Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus (1753: 1158; type locality: Atlantic Ocean). Sargassum flexile has been treated as a synonym of S. angustifolium by J. Agardh (1889: 81–82), Grunow (1915 [1915–1916]: 365), and Tseng & Lu (1988: 28, 50).
