Cystoseira robusta J. Agardh, 1896: 41, nom. illeg. (type locality: Israelite Bay, Western Australia).

Acrocarpia robusta Womersley, 1964: 99–100, figs. 43, 44; pl. 15: fig. 1 (including Indian Ocean record).—Nizamuddin, 1970: 131.— Womersley, 1987: 364, figs. 130B, 132E,F.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Australia.

Note: Cystoseira robusta J. Agardh, the intended basionym of Acrocarpia robusta, is not priorable since it is a later homonym of C. robusta Kützing (1843b: 358; type locality: Gulf of Trieste, Italy). Acrocarpia robusta Womersley is treated as a nomen novum in accordance with Art. 58.3. The earlier homonym was referred by Hauck (1883 [1882–1885]: 296) to C. crinita Duby (1830: 936), a currently recognized species not reported from the Indian Ocean. Cystoseira crinita was intended to be a combination of Fucus crinitus Desfontaines (1799 [1798–1799]: 425; type locality: Mediterranean Sea), but that name is not priorable since it is a later homonym of F. crinitus S. Gmelin (1768: 160 as F. crinatus, pl. XVIII: fig. 2 as F. crinitus; type locality: "Mare Kamtschaticum'' [Sea of Okhotsk, Siberia]), applicable to a species that is currently recognized as Tichocarpus crinitus (S. Gmelin) Ruprecht (1850: 320), the only member of the family Tichocarpaceae (Schmitz & Hauptfleisch) Kylin (1932: 69) in the Cryptonemiales.
