Asperococcus cancellatus (Bory de Saint-Vincent) Sonder, 1846 [1846–1848]: 156.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Aldabra Islands, Andaman Islands, Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Diego Garcia Atoll, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Kuwait, Laccadive Islands, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nicobar Islands, Pakistan, Réunion, Rodriguez Island, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Singapore, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania.

Note: In the protologue of Encoelium clathratum, C. Agardh cited two collections by Gaudichaud ("Ravak'' [Rauki, Waigeo Island, Moluccas, Indonesia] and "Baie de Chien Marin'' [Shark Bay, Western Australia]) and a collection by Bory de Saint-Vincent from Belle-Île, near the coast of Brittany, Atlantic France, sent to Agardh under the name "Fucus clathratus, Bory msct.'' The Belle-Île collection was designated type (i.e. lectotype) by Howe (1920: 590). According to Bornet (1892: 249), however, the shells in the specimens labeled by Bory (in PC) do not match the fauna of the Brittany coast so that the provenance of the lectotype collection remains unknown. Hydroclathrus cancellatus Bory de Saint-Vincent is based solely on the Belle-Île collection.

Addendum: This species was recorded (as H. cancellatus) by Forbes (1901: 562) from Socotra.
