Zonaria diesingiana J. Agardh, 1841: 443–444 (type locality: "ad oras Novae Hollandiae'' [probably near Sydney, Australia fide Allender & Kraft, 1983: 81]).—Grunow, 1867: 50.— Reichardt, 1871: 22.— Hemsley, 1884: 281.— Okamura, 1904: 85, 94.
INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Australia, St. Paul Island.
Note: Womersley (1967: 228–229) rejected this name as a nomen dubium on the grounds that the specimen from the type sheet (LD 48061) figured by Levring (1946: figs. 1, 2) represents the basal portion of an undeterminable Zonaria. Subsequently, Allender & Kraft (1983: 77–81, figs. 2, 3, 4A–F) characterized the species on the basis of three other specimens on the type sheet (their fig. 2A) in conjunction with recent collections from Lord Howe Island and New South Wales. They designated as lectotype one of the specimens shown in their fig. 2A, in conflict with Levring's designation.
