INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Mozambique, South Africa.

Note: This combination is proposed in an unpublished manuscript by Papenfuss, Fan, & Chihara on the South African marine flora. The misapplication of Zonaria lobata, Stypopodium lobatum, Padina pavonia, and Stypopodium zonale is recorded in Papenfuss's notes. We have extrapolated slightly to include citations that are probably based on records of the specimens examined by Papenfuss. Confusion between Zonaria multipartita and Zonaria lobata began with J. Agardh (1848b: 109), who included the former as a synonym of the latter, a taxonomic conclusion not supported by the studies of Papenfuss, Fan, & Chihara. Padina pavonia Lamouroux var. multifida Hering, a name without a description in Krauss (1846: 213) that was applied to an alga from "Natalbai'' [Durban, South Africa], is referable to S. multipartitum according to Papenfuss (notes).

Addendum: Stypopodium multipartitum (Suhr) P. Silva was validated in Silva, Basson, & Moe (University of California Publications in Botany 79: 611. 1996).
