INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Aldabra Islands, Andaman Islands, Australia, Bangladesh, Christmas Island, Comoro Islands, Diego Garcia Atoll, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Kuwait, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Pakistan, Réunion, Seychelles (Praslin Island), Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand.

Note: Padina commersonii Bory de Saint-Vincent (1828 [1826–1829]: 144), a name that traditionally has been applied to the present species, is an illegitimate substitute for P. tenuis (C. Agardh) Bory de Saint-Vincent (1827b: 590), whose basionym, Zonaria pavonia var. tenuis C. Agardh (1824: 264; type locality: Mariana Islands), has been shown by Womersley & Bailey (1970: 293) and Papenfuss (1977: 277) to be referable to Lobophora variegata (Lamouroux) Womersley ex Oliveira (q.v.). The material that Bory de Saint-Vincent had in hand (a Commerson collection from Mauritius) was incorporated in a new species, P. boryana, by Thivy. In an alternative treatment, Womersley & Bailey (1970: 292–293) interpreted P. tenuis as a new species typified with the Commerson collection from Mauritius. Vaughaniella rupicola Børgesen is included as a possible synonym of P. boryana on the authority of Børgesen (1951: 11–14, fig. 4), who pursued a suggestion made by Cribb in correspondence (later published: Cribb, 1951).
