Ectocarpus simpliciusculus C. Agardh, 1827: 639 (type locality: Trieste, Italy).—Hohenacker, 1860 [1852–1862]: no. 423.— Reinbold, 1907: 565.— Misra, 1966b: 74.— S. Dixit, 1980: 64.— Untawale, Dhargalkar, & Agadi, 1983: [17].
INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: India, Indonesia (Sumatra), Laccadive Islands, Seychelles (Mahé Island), South Africa.
Note: Hohenacker no. 423 was allegedly collected at Cape Agulhas, South Africa. Papenfuss (notes) examined three distributions of this number at Leiden (L) and thought that all were representative of Herponema J. Agardh (1882: 55–57) in the Myrionemataceae. He also examined distributions at the British Museum (BM) and Uppsala (UPS), but made no comment on their taxonomic assignment.
