IOC entry for Ectocarpus heterocarpus

Previous entry: Ectocarpus flagelliformis

Ectocarpus heterocarpus P. Crouan & H. Crouan, nom. inval.

Ectocarpus heterocarpus P. Crouan & H. Crouan in Mazé & Schramm, 1878: 111 (intended syntype localities: Port-Louis and Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe, West Indies).—Bornet, 1885: 17.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Madagascar.

Note: The validity of publication of Ectocarpus heterocarpus and the names of several other new taxa proposed by the Crouan brothers in Mazé & Schramm is equivocal since only the color was described, usually in two or three words. If these words were unique within the genus, it could be argued that they constitute a validating description. In the case of E. heterocarpus, however, the words "vert jaunâtre'' were also given for E. duchassaingianus Grunow.
