Osmundaria Lamouroux

Note: R. Norris (1991a) has merged Vidalia with Osmundaria.

Osmundaria fimbriata (Lamouroux) R. Norris

Fucus fimbriatus R. Brown ex Turner, 1809–1811: 87–88, pl. 170, nom. illeg. (type locality: northern Australia).

Delesseria fimbriata Lamouroux, 1813: 124.

Vidalia fimbriata (Lamouroux) J. Agardh, 1863 [1851–1863]: 1124.—Hariot, 1902: 471.

Osmundaria fimbriata (Lamouroux) R. Norris, 1991a: 22–23, fig. 25 (including Indian Ocean record).

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Madagascar.

Note: Fucus fimbriatus R. Brown ex Turner, the intended basionym of Vidalia fimbriata, is not priorable since there are three prior usages of the same name. Fucus fimbriatus S. Gmelin (1768: 200, pl. XXIX: fig. 1; type locality: Kamchatka, Siberia) was referred to Alaria esculenta (Linnaeus) Greville forma latifolia Postels & Ruprecht (1840: 11, pl. XVII) by Postels & Ruprecht (l.c.). Hudson (1778: 574) described an alga from southern England (Portland, Dorset) as Fucus fimbriatus, which he erroneously associated with F. caulescens S. Gmelin (1768: 173–175, pl. XX: fig. 2; lectotype locality: "Cap. Bon. Sp.'' fide Lamouroux, 1813: 125). J. Agardh (1851 [1851–1863]: 480) placed F. caulescens in the synonymy of Suhria vittata (Linnaeus) J. Agardh (q.v.), while Hudson's material from southern England was referred by Turner (1808–1809: 6, 8) to the species currently known as Phyllophora pseudoceranoides (S. Gmelin) Newroth & A. Taylor. The third earlier usage of F. fimbriatus is that by Desfontaines (1799 [1798–1799]: 423, pl. 259; type locality: Mediterranean Sea). Turner (1811–1819: 134, 136) referred F. fimbriatus Desfontaines to the species currently known as Cystoseira foeniculacea (Linnaeus) Greville.

Delesseria fimbriata Lamouroux is treated as a nomen novum in accordance with Art. 58.3 and serves as the basionym for subsequent combinations. It should be noted, however, that Lamouroux misidentified the material at hand, which was in fact representative of Delisea elegans Lamouroux [p. 183] (see P. Silva, 1957b: 143). Hariot's record of Vidalia fimbriata from Madagascar was confirmed by R. Norris (1991a: 23), who examined the cited collection (in PC).
