INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Sri Lanka.
Note: When Gmelin (l.c.) published Fucus pinastroides, he cited Fucus incurvus as a synonym. Gmelin's name is thus superfluous, illegitimate, and not priorable. Sphaerococcus pinastroides is treated as a nomen novum in accordance with Art. 58.3. Hudson's epithet was restored by Batters (l.c.). Turner's report of a collection from Ceylon by "Dr. Smith'', which has been repeated by subsequent authors, is the only record from the Indian Ocean.
