Note: C. Agardh (1822 [1822–1823]: 345), basing his opinion on two Forsskål specimens given to him by Retzius and on other Forsskål specimens that he saw in the herbaria of Thunberg and Acharius, interpreted Conferva seticulosa as a species of Chondria. Børgesen (1932c: 3–4), however, noting that the specimens of Conferva seticulosa in Forsskål's herbarium (in C) were representative of Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) Lamouroux, proposed a new name, Laurencia hypnoides, for "Chondria seticulosa Ag.''. Later, Børgesen (1939a) re-examined Forsskål specimens (in C) and found that Acanthophora as well as Hypnea was represented, while an examination of the Forsskål specimens in the Agardh herbarium confirmed C. Agardh's opinion that they were representative of Chondria rather than Laurencia. Papenfuss (1968c: 97–98) considered C. Agardh's action to be a binding lectotypification, thereby rendering Laurencia hypnoides and Chondria hypnoides superfluous names.
