Note: The conspecificity of Rhodomela crassicaulis and Lophura armata was proposed by Okamura (1907 [1907–1909]: 69–71). Harvey (1857a: no. 8) used the name Rhodomela crassicaulis, without a description, in his Ceylon exsiccata. His record was repeated by G. Murray (1887: 31) and J. Agardh (1892: 161). Børgesen (1932b) separated the Indian Ocean populations of Chondria armata from the Japanese populations as var. plumaris, but Papenfuss (1968b: 269) did not maintain this distinction. According to Saenger (1974: 21), the plant from Mozambique reported as ?Alsidium sp. by Pocock (1958: 27) is Chondria armata.
