Misapplied name (fide Papenfuss notes):
Polysiphonia juncea.—Hohenacker, 1862 [1852–1862]: no. 576.
INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Australia?, South Africa.
Note: According to Womersley (1979: 509), "The Australian record (originated by Falkenberg, 1901, p. 146) is almost certainly in error and the species is therefore rejected from the Australian flora''. The Krauss record from Knysna of Polysiphonia fuliginosa, a binomial included as a synonym on the authority of J. Agardh (1863 [1851–1863]: 1061–1063), seems to be the only record from east of Cape Agulhas. Papenfuss (notes) was unable to locate the specimen upon which the record was based.Wynne (1986c: 321–322), pointing out that several allegedly distinctive characters of Carradoria may be found in one or more species of Polysiphonia, retained this species in the latter genus. It may be noted, however, that many genera are differentiated on the basis of a distinctive combination of characters rather than a combination of distinctive characters.
