Note: The correct name for this species, as circumscribed by Womersley & Shepley (l.c.), would seem to be Hypoglossum hypoglossoides (Harvey) Womersley & Shepley, but it is necessary to adopt a later synonym because of the prior existence of H. hypoglossoides (Stackhouse) Collins & Hervey (1917: 116) (Fucus hypoglossoides Stackhouse, 1801 [1795–1801]: 76, pl. XIII; lectotype locality: Polridmouth, Cornwall, England fide Wynne, 1984a: 86), a species not reported from the Indian Ocean.
