Ceramium puberulum Sonder var. crassius (J. Agardh) J. Agardh, 1876: 102 (`crassior').

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Australia.

Note: J. Agardh (1851 [1851–1863]: 132) merged Ceramium monile J. Hooker & Harvey (1847: 410; type locality: Tasmania) with C. puberulum, but erroneously retained the younger name. He recognized C. puberulum as a variety of C. monile, using a new varietal epithet (crassius) rather than retaining puberulum, an option permitted by the ICBN. Later (1876: 102), he restored the earlier name for the combined species, treating C. monile as a variety of C. puberulum. The nomenclaturally typical form was then named C. puberulum var. crassius, an incorrect name for the autonym, var. puberulum.
