Ceramium planum Kützing

Ceramium planum Kützing, 1849: 687 (type locality: Cape of Good Hope, South Africa).—Pocock, 1958: 27.— Seagrief, 1967: 74, pl. [29].— Seagrief, 1988: 62, fig. 5:13.— R. Anderson & Stegenga, 1989: 302, 308, fig. 13.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Mozambique, South Africa.

Note: Simons (1966a: 157) cited specimens from no farther east in South Africa than False Bay. He later (Simons, 1968) suggested that this species might be referable to Campylaephora J. Agardh, 1851 [1851–1863]. Although R. Anderson & Stegenga (l.c.) reported Ceramium planum from Bird Island, near Port Elizabeth, Stegenga & Bolton (1992: fig. 3) indicated an eastern limit west of Cape Agulhas.
