Sphaerococcus australis Kützing, 1849: 784, nom. illeg.

Acropeltis australis J. Agardh, 1852 [1851–1863]: 609–610.—Kützing, 1869: 12–13, pl. 34: figs. c–e.

Rhodymenia sonderi P. Silva.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Andaman Islands, Australia, India, Indonesia (Lombok), Yemen.

Note: Rhodymenia australis is a superfluous and hence illegitimate name because Sonder originally applied it to a species that included (as var. constricta) Fucus constrictus Turner (1809–1811), which was later made the lectotype of Polyopes J. Agardh in the Halymeniaceae. No synonym seems to be available. When transferring R. australis to Sphaerococcus, Kützing (1849: 784) excluded F. constrictus as a synonym, so that the name S. australis is not superfluous. Nonetheless, it is illegitimate since it is a later homonym of S. australis Harvey (1844c: 445–446) (treated as a taxonomic synonym of Callophyllis rangiferina (R. Brown ex Turner) Womersley on page 206 of this catalogue). Acropeltis australis J. Agardh is also not a superfluous name and thus could serve as a basionym if the species were moved to another genus (barring pre-emption by an earlier homonym in the new position).

Addendum: Rhodymenia sonderi P. Silva was validated in Silva, Basson, & Moe (University of California Publications in Botany 79: 370. 1996).
