Leptosomia J. Agardh

* Leptosomia cliftonii (J. Agardh) J. Agardh

Chrysymenia cliftonii J. Agardh, 1876: 319 (`cliftoni') (type locality: Garden Island, Western Australia).—Sonder, 1880: 18.

Leptosomia cliftonii (J. Agardh) J. Agardh, 1892: 88.—Kylin, 1931: 19–20, pl. 5: fig. 11.— V. May, 1965: 409.— D. Irvine & Guiry, 1980: 297.

Sebdenia ? cliftonii (J. Agardh) De Toni, 1900: 533 (`cliftoni').—Lucas, 1909: 33.

Misapplied name (fide J. Agardh, 1876: 135–136, 319):

Halymenia cliftonii.—Harvey, 1859a: pl. CIII (in part; see also Cryptonemia kallymenioides).— Harvey, 1863: xlvi (in part).

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Australia.

Note: Harvey (1855b: 556) described Halymenia kallymenioides and later (1859: pl. CIII) changed the epithet to cliftonii. In his amplified description, however, he included a mixture of two species, as noted by J. Agardh (1876: 135–136, 319), who described the second species as Chrysymenia cliftonii. The epithet cliftonii in this species dates from 1876 and must be accredited to J. Agardh since Halymenia cliftonii Harvey, being an avowed substitute name, is a nomenclatural synonym of H. kallymenioides (Cryptonemia kallymenioides (Harvey) Kraft (q.v.)).

Addendum: Leptosomia cliftonii has been merged with Leptosomia rosea (Harvey) Womersley by Womersley (1996: 103).
