Eucheuma inerme Schmitz, 1895a: 139, 150–151 (type locality: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania).—Schmitz, 1895b: 27.— De Toni, 1897: 369.— Weber-van Bosse, 1928: 410, fig. 160.— Mshigeni, 1973: 21.— Lawson, 1980: 42.— Doty & J. Norris, 1985: 49.
Kappaphycus inerme (Schmitz) Doty ex P. Silva.
INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Tanzania.
Note: The first attempt to publish the combination Kappaphycus inerme (Doty, 1988: 173, figs. 12, 13) was invalid since Doty did not cite the exact pagination of the protologue of the basionym and thus failed to satisfy Art. 33.2. The invalid combination was used by Santos (1989: 56, fig. 1, table 1). Mshigeni (1984: 347) placed Eucheuma inerme in the synonymy of E. striatum. Doty (l.c.), while not following this treatment, thought that further study might prove the merger to be justified.
