Note: Doty (1988: 171) segregated this genus from Eucheuma on the basis of a combination of gross morphological, anatomical, and biochemical characters. Its name derives from the fact that k-carrageenan rather than i- or b-carrageenan is the predominant phycocolloid.
Eucheuma alvarezii Doty, 1985: 37–41, figs. 1–6 (type locality: Sabah, Malaysia).
Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty ex P. Silva.
INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Indonesia.
Note: The first attempt to publish the combination Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty, 1988: 172) was invalid since Doty did not cite the exact pagination of the protologue of the basionym and thus failed to satisfy Art. 33.2. The invalid combination was used by Luxton (1993: 366) for a record from southern Indonesia.
