IOC entry for Callophycus condominius

Previous entry: Gigartina speciosa var. denudata

Callophycus Trevisan

* Callophycus condominius R. Norris

Callophycus condominius R. Norris, 1987g: 234–237, figs. 1–7 (type locality: Lala Nek, Ubombo district, Natal, South Africa).

Misapplied names:

Thysanocladia dentata.—Schmitz, 1895a: 139, 153.— Schmitz, 1895b: 27.— De Toni, 1897: 382.— Jaasund, 1976: 91, figs. 183A,B.

Callophycus dentatus.—Jaasund, 1977c: 421.— Lawson, 1980: 35.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: South Africa, Tanzania.

Note: We follow the suggestion of R. Norris (1987g: 236) in referring the Tanzanian records of Thysanocladia dentata and Callophycus dentatus to C. condominius. Jaasund (1977c: 421) erred in citing the authorship of Callophycus dentatus as (Kützing) P. Silva. P. Silva (1957b: 144) explicitly refrained from making the combination. R. Norris (1987g: 237, figs. 8, 9) examined the type specimen of Gelidium dentatum Kützing (type locality: Mediterranean), the alleged basionym, and concluded that it was correctly placed in Gelidium.
