INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Australia, Madagascar?, Mauritius?, Réunion.
Note: The conspecificity of Fucus peperocarpos and F. labillardieri was proposed by C. Agardh (1822 [1822–1823]: 296), who, however, erroneously adopted the younger name. In making the combination with Phacelocarpus, Wynne, Ardré, & P. Silva (1993) explained why they preferred to spell the epithet peperocarpos and why the provenance of the type specimen is probably Australia rather than Madagascar or Mauritius, as indicated uncertainly by Poiret. Barton (1893: 143) reported two collections from South Africa as Phacelocarpus labillardieri, but Searles (1968) recognized only P. oligacanthus and P. tortuosus in that area.
