Note: Hypnea harveyi is included as a synonym on the authority of J. Agardh (1851 [1851–1863]: 445) and Papenfuss (notes). Hypnea armata was added to the synonymy by Papenfuss (1943a: 86). Incidentally, this name is a later homonym of Hypnea armata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh (1842: 149) (Gracilaria armata (C. Agardh) Greville (q.v.)).
