Note: J. Agardh (1851 [1851–1863]: 443) thought that this variety might be referable to its own species. It is one of several varieties stated by Mshigeni & D. Chapman (1994: 260) "to fall within the range of morphological variability'' of Hypnea cervicornis and H. valentiae.
