FURCELLARIACEAE

Furcellaria Lamouroux, nom. cons.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: India, Pakistan.

Note: The synonymy of this species was thoroughly researched by K. Drew (1958: 748–750), who, however, came to an incorrect conclusion. She treated Fucus lumbricalis var. fastigiatus Turner as a combination of F. fastigiatus Linnaeus (1753: 1162; type locality: Baltic Sea) when in fact Turner (1802a: 310; 1807–1808: 9–10) referred F. fastigiatus to F. rotundus Turner var. fastigiatus (Linnaeus) Turner and described a new entity as F. lumbricalis var. fastigiatus Turner. The latter was elevated to specific rank by Lamouroux (l.c.) in his new genus Furcellaria. K. Drew (l.c.) adopted the name Furcellaria fastigiata, which she incorrectly attributed to (Linnaeus) Lamouroux. Although Fucus fastigiatus Linnaeus is the oldest name for this species, the combination Furcellaria fastigiata (Linnaeus) C. Agardh (1822 [1822–1823]: 103) is not available because it is a later homonym of Furcellaria fastigiata (Turner) Lamouroux. Hence, Fucus lumbricalis Hudson, the next oldest name for this species, serves as the basionym of its correct name.
