INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: St. Paul Island, South Africa.

Note: The synonymy was proposed by Papenfuss (l.c.). Euthora reptans is a name, without a description, given by Grunow (1874: 35) to the alga distributed by Hohenacker as Phyllophora reptans Suhr, epiphytic on Codium from Cape Agulhas, South Africa. Since Grunow (1867: 82) had previously referred P. reptans to the Gelidiaceae (Suhria reptans (Suhr) Grunow, treated as Gelidium reptans (Suhr) Kylin (q.v.)), Euthora reptans should not be considered a combination of that species. Although there is insufficient evidence accompanying Euthora reptans to treat it as anything other than an invalidly published name, De Toni (1897: 335) thought that it might be an intended combination of another Suhr species often confused with P. reptans, namely, Halymenia reptans. Papenfuss's notes support this interpretation, since they record that the Hohenacker specimen in Grunow's herbarium (at W) is labeled "Rhodophyllis reptans (Suhr)''. Papenfuss, while agreeing with Grunow's opinion on the placement of H. reptans, thought that the Hohenacker specimen examined by Grunow was representative of an undescribed species of Rhodophyllis.
