INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Saya de Malha Bank.
Note: When Foslie (1907c: 100–101; 1907d: 184–185) divided Lithothamnion gibbosum into two forms, "forma parvula'' clearly was intended to include the nomenclatural type and therefore is an invalid name for the autonym, forma gibbosum. It is equally clear from Foslie's statement, "the form parvula ... possibly represents the typical form of the species'', that he was using "typical'' to mean morphologically typical rather than nomenclaturally typical. Appreciation of the fact that the two kinds of types did not always coincide is the key to understanding Foslie's infraspecific treatments. (See Note to Hydrolithon craspedium (Foslie) P. Silva (q.v.), for example.)
