Lithothamnion Heydrich, nom. cons.

Lithothamnion album Heydrich

Millepora polymorpha Linnaeus var. globosa Esper, 1789 [1788–1791]: pl. Millepora XIII; 1790 [1788–1791]: 215 (type locality: "Südlichen americanischen Küsten'').

Lithothamnion album Heydrich, 1897a: 66.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: "Ostindien''.

Note: In treating the variability of Millepora polymorpha Linnaeus, Esper (1788–1791: 212 ff., pls. Millepora XIII–XVI) recognized four varieties, namely, a globosa (pl. XIII), b ramosa (pl. XIV), g tophiformis (pl. XV), and rubescens (pl. XVI). The second variety was subdivided into three forms, namely, ramis conicis (pl. XIV: fig. 1), divaricata (pl. XIV: fig. 2), and cuneiformis (pl. XIV: fig. 3). Vague Indian Ocean localities were given only for var. ramosa. Intending to elevate the first two varieties to specific rank, Heydrich (l.c.) proposed the name Lithothamnion album for var. globosa and L. esperi for var. ramosa, but he miscited var. a globosa as var. a ramosa. Thus, his indication of "Ostindien'' for this entity, for which Esper had indicated "Südlichen americanischen Küsten'', may be in error.
